BUSINESS SETUP
You can set up the following types of business in Malta:
- Private Limited Companies
- Public Limited Companies
- Partnerships
Private Limited Company
This is the most popular form of company to be incorporated in Malta. The minimum required share capital is €1164.69, of
which only 20% (€232.94) must be paid up. At least one shareholder, director and secretary of the company are required.
Allocation for corporate directors for this type of company is allowed and there are no restrictions on where company
shareholder meetings are held. Audited accounts must be prepared and filed annually.
Public Limited Company
This form of company is usually incorporated by larger businesses, and shares may be held by the public. The minimum
required share capital is €46,600, of which 25% (€116.50) must be paid up. There must be at least two directors and two
shareholders of the company.
Partnership
These can take the form of a:-
General partnership – with unlimited liability, or Limited partnership – with limited liability
Main Taxes In The Malta
The two main types of taxation in Malta are:

This is divided into two:
Corporate Income Tax
All companies incorporated or resident in Malta, including those companies whose management and control is located in
Malta, may be liable to pay Corporate Income Tax. The current rate stands at a flat 35%.
Personal Income Tax
This is levied on the worldwide income of Maltese domiciled and resident individuals and any income arising in Malta or
received in Malta by a non-domiciled, resident individual. Tax is levied at progressive rates which vary depending on the
amount of income that is taxable, as well as the individual’s marital and parental status.
For a married couple resident in Malta the rates are as follows:
- No tax is applicable for income up to €11,900.
- For income between €11,901 and €21,200, the rate is 15%.
- For income between €21,201 and €28,700, the rate is 25%.
- For income of €28,701 and greater, the rate is 35%.
- For single persons resident in Malta the rates are as follows:
- No tax is applicable for income up to €8,500.
- For income between €8,501 and €14,500, the rate is 15%.
- For income between €14,501 and €19,500, the rate is 25%.
- For incomes of €19,501 and greater, the rate is 35%.
- For parents the rates are as follows:
- No tax is applicable for income up to €9,300.
- For income between €9,301 and €15,800, the rate is 15 %.
- For income between €15,801 and €21,200, the rate is 25%.
- For income of €21,201 and greater, the rate is 35%.
VAT
The standard VAT rate in Malta is 18%, although there are reductions to 7%, 5% and 0% for the supply of specific types of
goods and services.
Maltese VAT applies through self-assessment tax system in which registered individuals manage their own liability for VAT.
VAT returns are usually filed quarterly.
